Nicolas Makelberge

Educational background:
Nicolas Makelberge earned his Bachelor in Information Science
at Johnson & Wales University, USA and a Masters in
Interaction Design at IT-University in Gothenburg, Sweden and
currently is working towards his PhD in Computer Music
at Catholic University of Portugal in Porto.

His work experience is primarily in interface development and
user experience design working the past 10 years for companies
such as American Express, NBA, Morgan Stanley and Monster.com.

His current research interests are in New Interfaces for Musical
Expression, Musicology, Cognitive Sciences, and Anthropology.

Achievements:
Published paper “Computing against the grain” in Design Philosophy Papers 2003
concerning Sustainable Interaction Design.

Research project, main aim, objectives and targeted outcomes:

Main Aim:
Investigating the impact of technology on musical collaboration
among remote users working collaboratively, while exploring
both the limitations and affordances of technology on group creativity.

Objectives:
To gain an understanding of computer-supported collaborative music creativity.
In particular, it aims at developing prototype systems for supporting collaborative music practices.

Targeted Outcomes:
A new interface for musical expression and a PhD thesis.
